Marzipan and chocolate presents

Wednesday, march 25th 2009

To freshen some things up I had a lesson about marzipan.  As mentioned before, marzipan is very handy to make little characters or forms and give them as little present.  With some creativity you can create all sorts of forms, especially when combined with chocolate.

First of all you make some small chocolate plates where you can put the figure on.  You prepare the marzipan, different colours, different weights.  Now you can start with forming and glueing things togheter.

Once the composition is toghter it is sprayed with cocoabutter to give the figure a nice shine.

Here some pictures :

Pumpkin

Rabbit in bath

Rabbit in egg

Egg duck

Open shoe filled with pralines

All of em

The advantage of marzipan is also that it can kept good for consumption for some time when stored correctly (in the darknes and dry).

Well, thats all for this week

Next week more about the exam preparations.

Chocolate boxes and techniques to make them

Wednesday, march 18th 2009

It is wonderfull weather outside, the spring is in the air.  Time to get creative with chocolate box making.

Yesterday I made a test box with white chocolade and also made a cover for it.  The box is made with a plastic bag which you put in the chocolate.  After removing the plastic you get the rough edge.  The cover is made with a plastic bag, drip chocolate onto a pattern made in plastic and let it harden.  After removing the plastic bag you get a box that seems to be cracked.

The cover has some extra decoration

I am now working on the preparations for my final exam.  I have to make a piece in chocolate.  I have chosen to make the Musselpot from Marcel Broothaers.  More about this when I have the final idea.  Thanks to Xavier Desmit, he provided me with moulds to make mussels.  I can use them for my musselpot.

Next week there is another lesson concerning marzipan, more then.

Enjoy the good weather.

Today I learned a new technique to create different forms of boxes with chocolate without the need of a mould.  Most of the figures are made with moulds in a sort of plastic – makrolon.  If you want to make different shapes or boxes then you can use little pieces of baking paper to close the sides.  I don’t have pictures yet of the process, but I hope to get some of my colleague Xavier.

The figure I made in the lesson was an owl.  The design of the owl has been made by Escriba.  It is worth a visit, for the the website only.  Escriba has made different designs of objects to create with chocolate.

The result is here :

Owl

Next week I start the activities for my exam and final test.  I have chosen to make a well known object, but I cannot tell more about it yet.  Follow it from next week on  this site.

Enjoy the weekend

The art continues, decorations

Wednesday, march 4th 2009

It’s been a week or two since my last post.  This all came because of the week vacation there was.

Now that all that is over I continue my courses.  I am still working on the module : “Art and chocolate”, which is a very interesting chapter.  Since good crafted chocolate designs are a real eye-catcher, it is necessary to get the techniques to produce things.

Today I made a box out of dark chocolate, decorated with some balls and spouted with a red colour.  I also tested some forms to make other boxes and last but not least I used a plastic package mould to make a computer mouse.  Idea’s enough to start experimenting in my kitchen.

Check out the results :

As you see, there are endless possibilities to use forms to make chocolate boxes.  These chocolate boxes can be filled with anything that you can think of, as long it is chocolate :) .

Enjoy the rest of the week
